Vaison la Romaine
This city thanks its reputation to its cultural and archaeological patrimony. As art city, Vaison la Romaine became the cultural city and organises annually a large number of events: concerts, exhibitions, conferences, spectacular plays, theatre, etc.
Vaison is split up in two parts by the river l'Ouvèze.
Vaison la Romaine On the right side are two different quarters: the site of the ancient Roman colony and the modern town.
Archeological digs have revealed immense, luxurious and elaborate Gallo Roman buildings. There are floors in mosaics, marble, marquetry and statues, ponds, atriums and private thermal baths, all showing life in Roman times, twohundred years ago
All this shows that every day's life was already very refined and that the Romans attached great importance to artistic creation! Vaison la Romaine
Vaison la Romaine On the left side on top of a rocky hill, there is the 'Haute-Ville', originating from the XIIIth century. In Medieval times the villagers settled in the heights at the foot of the castle to protect themselves from robbers and invasion.
Today the castle is a ruine, which makes the 'Haute-Ville' an even more picturesque spot to visit.
Little shady squares, ancient doorways and narrow cobbled streets are dotted with superb fountains and lined by the fagades of mansions from the 16th and 18th century.

Even if a climb to the top of Haute-Ville seems too steep, you will be rewarded for your efforts by the wonderful view on Vaison and its surroundings!
